Mental Illness Working with dual diagnosis individuals is a complex challenge that requires knowledge of positive behaviors support as well as current developments in psychology and psychiatry practice. Life Skills is careful to assess the possibility that that individuals may be receiving medication that is excessive, inappropriate or is causing adverse interactions. Post Traumatic Stress Sexual and physical abuse of individuals with developmentally disabilities often goes unrecognized and untreated. Life Skills offers counseling to consumers who may have been victims of such abuse. Substance Abuse Treatment Life Skills works with individuals who have a substance abuse problem and provides drug education, supportive counseling and can assist the transition to a substance abuse treatment program. Sexual Acting Out Some Life Skills’ consumers have a history of sexually inappropriate behavior in the community. Life Skills helps individuals eliminate sexually inappropriate behaviors and replace them with healthy intimacy. Alternative to Incarceration Referrals to Life Skills are often made for individuals who may be facing probation or jail time. Life Skills works closely with the court and probation department in providing an alternative to incarceration.
